The Benefits of E-books
by Lisa Tuttle

If you are a bookaholic like me, you know the inconveniences you endure in order to feed your need to read. Books can be expensive, they are heavy and they take up an excessive amount of storage space. But advances in technology have created a new way to publish books, which eliminates the inconveniences associated with traditional print material.

Several innovative publishers have begun offering electronic books, also known as e-books. With a few clicks on the Internet, you can download the books you want to read. What are the advantages?

Save time: Purchasing an e-book does not require a trip to the bookstore. Just surf a few sites on the net. E-book publishers often post a first chapter or excerpt so you can sample before you buy.

Save money: E-books are generally less expensive than printed books. Because e-book publishers donít have to pay for paper, ink and binding, they are able to pass on a significant savings to their customers.

Save your back: Download the books to your computer, laptop, Palm Pilot, or an eReader specifically designed for the purpose of handling electronic books. E-books take up very little memory, so you can carry multiple books with you without hurting your back, a definite plus for people who like to read while traveling or on vacation. Another benefi to electronic gadgets usually have lighted screens so you can read in the dark.

Save space: No need to buy another bookshelf to store your reading material. Storing e-books on disk requires a fraction of the shelf space a print book needs.

However, if you love the feel and smell of a new book, you can order your e-books in trade paperback form. Many electronic publishers have contracts with print-on-demand publishers, and can supply you with a printed copy of the books you enjoy.
